Sonic CD
HackSonic CD makes its unofficial debut on the original PlayStation through an impressive community port by Lightwish. Built from the 2011 Retro Engine remaster, this fan-made conversion brings the complete Sonic CD experience to Sony's 32-bit console—time travel, Metal Sonic, the Japanese and US soundtracks, and Tails as a playable character—all running at a smooth 60 frames per second with no slowdown, even in the Special Stages.

About This Retro Game
Sonic CD first released for the Sega CD in 1993 as Sonic Team's most ambitious 2D platformer, introducing the time-travel mechanic that let players warp between the Past, Present, and Future of each Zone. It was later ported to PC, GameCube, PlayStation 2, and modern platforms, but never received an official release on the original PlayStation—until now.
This community port by Lightwish converts the 2011 Retro Engine remaster into a native PlayStation 1 disc image. The port avoids runtime asset decoding entirely: sprites are pre-packed into VRAM atlases, music is streamed as CD-XA audio for both the US and Japanese soundtracks, sound effects use SPU-ADPCM within the console's 512 KB sound RAM, and FMV cutscenes are encoded as MDEC video. The 3D Special Stage floors are projected using the PlayStation's GTE geometry coprocessor, and the disc layout places files in load order for fast access without directory reads.
The result runs at 60 FPS with no slowdown, though the opening cutscene has a known glitch. It runs best on DuckStation and RetroArch's PCSX ReARMed core, and is reported to have issues on Beetle PSX and SwanStation. This is a technical marvel of homebrew preservation, offering PS1 owners the definitive Sonic CD experience without any compromises in content or performance.
