About This Retro Game

The story begins in a small village perched on a cliff. The protagonist is a 15-year-old Craftknight apprentice who lost their parents at a young age and was taken in by their father's friend, a master blacksmith. A forbidden ruins lies in the village, sealed to contain a terrifying summon beast called Gola. When the protagonist's friend Ryouga tricks them into entering the ruins and breaks the seal, the protagonist must embark on a journey with their Guardian Beast to find the four "Magic Blades" and reseal the ancient threat.

The game features a robust weapon crafting system where players collect materials from defeated enemies and mining points to forge over 100 unique weapons, including swords, axes, spears, drills, and knuckles. Each weapon type has distinct attack patterns and special techniques, with durability mechanics that encourage strategic swapping during combat. Weapon crafting recipes and quality improve as the protagonist's Craftknight rank increases.

Combat takes place in real-time side-scrolling battles. The player controls both the protagonist and their chosen Guardian Beast, who can be commanded to attack, use magic, or defend. The Guardian Beast system offers four companions to choose from at the start: a spirited Oni-child (Leki), a gentle-yet-strong Demon (Dina), a rational Machine Soldier (Y-XE-LD), or a quiet Beastman (Arno). Each has unique elemental affinities, magic spells, and personality-driven dialogue throughout the adventure.

Beyond the main quest, the game features robust fishing and cooking systems, a post-game boss rush, New Game Plus with carry-over progression, and extensive side quests. The colorful character designs by Shinichiro Otsuka, memorable music by Kohei Matsuoka, and expressive sprite work have made Swordcraft Story 2 a cult classic among GBA action RPG enthusiasts. The main story takes approximately 16 hours to complete, with over 30 hours for full completion.
