How to Save and Load Games

Learn the difference between in-game saves, local saves, and cloud saves, and how to create, overwrite, load, download, and delete saved games.

The Different Types of Saves

A game may have its own save command, password system, memory-card screen, or checkpoint system. That is part of the original game. ClassicGameZone saves capture the game’s save data so it can be kept as a local file or stored in your signed-in account.

  • An in-game save is created from inside the game’s own menus. Complete this step first whenever the game expects it.
  • A local save stays with the browser or device where it was created, or as a save file that you download and keep yourself.
  • A cloud save is attached to your ClassicGameZone account and appears in your save slots after you sign in.
  • Save Game collects the current save data and lets you create or overwrite a cloud slot. If you are signed out, you can sign in or download the save file.
  • Load Game opens your available cloud saves and also provides the option to import a compatible save file.

Saving a Game

  1. Use the game’s own save command first if the game has one, then wait until the save operation finishes.
  2. Open the emulator menu and choose Save Game.
  3. If you are signed out, choose Log In to open the sign-in window without leaving the running game. You may instead choose Download Save File to keep a local copy.
  4. After a successful sign-in, return to the game. The pending save action continues automatically.
  5. If this game has no cloud saves yet, the save is stored directly. If saves already exist, choose Create New Save or select an existing slot to overwrite.
  6. Keep the game open while the progress message is visible. A success or error message confirms the result.

Cloud Save Limits

Signed-in players can create up to three cloud save slots for each game. Before the limit is reached, you can create another slot or overwrite any existing slot. Once all three slots are in use, choose the slot that you want to replace.

If your account already contains more than three saves for one game, those older saves are not removed. You can continue to view, load, download, overwrite, and delete them, but you cannot create an additional slot until the number of saves is below the current limit.

Loading a Game

  1. Open the same game and select the same regional or language version that was used when the save was created.
  2. Wait until the game has finished loading, then open the emulator menu and choose Load Game.
  3. If you are signed out, choose Log In. After sign-in, the pending load action reopens your save list.
  4. Select the save that you want to use and wait for the success message before continuing.
  5. To load from the save management page, open your dashboard’s Saved Games page and choose Load on the appropriate save. The game starts with that save queued for loading.

Managing Saves

Signed-in players can open Dashboard → Saved Games to see stored saves, filter them by platform or game, and review the save date, screenshot, and file size.

  • Load launches the matching game page and queues that save for loading.
  • Download Save File keeps a copy of the save on your device.
  • Delete permanently removes the selected cloud save after confirmation.
  • To overwrite a save, return to the running game, choose Save Game, and select that existing slot.
  • Launching from a save keeps the game association used when the slot was created.

Local Saves

Existing local saves remain available. Local data belongs to the browser or device where it was created, while a downloaded save file remains wherever you store that file. Local saves do not automatically appear on another browser or device.

Use Load Game and then Import Save File when you want to use a compatible file from your device. When signed in, a successfully imported save can also be added to your cloud slots if a slot is available.

Common Save Questions

The game says it saved, but no cloud slot appears

The message may come from the game’s built-in save system. Open the emulator menu and choose Save Game to create or update a ClassicGameZone cloud slot.

The save is missing on another device

Confirm that you are signed in to the same account. A local or downloaded save does not sync automatically; import the file or use a cloud save.

Three slots are already in use

Choose an existing slot to overwrite, or delete a slot from Saved Games before creating or importing another one.

Does deleting a cloud save also erase the game’s built-in save?

Deleting a cloud slot removes that stored ClassicGameZone copy. It does not delete a separate file that you downloaded, and it does not remove a different local copy held by another browser or device.
