PoPoLoCrois Story
PoPoLoCrois Story is a tactical RPG developed by G-Artists and released for the PlayStation in 1996. Based on the beloved manga series by Yosuke Tamori, the game follows Prince Pietro on his quest to save his mother from a mysterious eternal slumber. The adventure begins as a seemingly simple task but expands into an epic journey of love, compassion, and friendship. Featuring gorgeous hand-drawn anime cutscenes and a grid-based tactical combat system that unfolds seamlessly on the field, PoPoLoCrois Story offers a charming fairy tale experience with deeper strategic depth than its storybook visuals might suggest.

The narrative begins on Prince Pietro's 10th birthday, when he discovers that his mother Queen Sania did not die in childbirth as he was told, but has been trapped in a deep coma for a decade. Defying his father's wishes, Pietro sets out alongside the apprentice forest witch Narcia and a growing cast of allies to recover the stolen Crown of Wisdom and ultimately journey to the underworld to reclaim his mother's soul. The story spans several years, allowing players to experience Pietro as a 10-year-old, a 12-year-old, and finally a 15-year-old young man.
Combat in PoPoLoCrois Story blends traditional turn-based mechanics with light tactical strategy. Encounters occur randomly on the world map, but battles unfold directly on the field using an isometric grid. Characters act according to an Active Gauge reminiscent of Final Fantasy's ATB system, positioning themselves around enemies to maximize damage from rear attacks. The unique Guts Meter adds risk-reward decision-making: each successful attack drains the meter and weakens future strikes, while skipping turns recharges it for devastating charged attacks.
As one of Sony's earliest first-party RPGs for the PlayStation, PoPoLoCrois Story is affectionately remembered for its hand-drawn pixel art, fully voiced story scenes, and anime cutscenes produced by Production I.G. While the later PSP compilation brought the series to English audiences, it heavily edited the original PS1 game's first chapter and removed significant story content. The original PlayStation version—now fully playable in English thanks to a fan translation—remains the definitive way to experience Pietro's complete journey in its original, more challenging form.
