The Third Age on GBA is a tactical RPG that focuses on strategic grid‑based combat. You assemble a party of four from six different classes, each with distinct skill trees and equipment options. Positioning, terrain, and elemental affinities play a key role in every skirmish.
The story runs parallel to the events of the films, with your party crossing paths with Aragorn, Gandalf, and other heroes. You'll visit locations such as Edoras, Helm's Deep, Minas Tirith, and the Black Gate, all recreated in isometric pixel art.
The game features a deep loot system with weapons, armour, and jewellery that can be enhanced through forging. You can also learn over 40 spells and abilities, from healing magic to devastating fire and lightning attacks.
Although the difficulty curve is steep and grinding is sometimes needed, critics praised the strategic depth and the sense of scale. It remains a cult classic among handheld RPG fans and Tolkien enthusiasts alike.
