7th Dragon
7th Dragon is a dungeon-crawling RPG developed by imageepoch and published by Sega for the Nintendo DS, released exclusively in Japan in 2009. Set in the world of Eden, where 80% of the land has been overtaken by deadly flowers called Furowaro and dragons rule supreme, players create a guild of hunters tasked with exterminating all 666 dragons to save humanity. The game is renowned for its all-star development team, including director Kazuya Niinou (Etrian Odyssey), producer Rieko Kodama (Phantasy Star), and composer Yuzo Koshiro.

The game blends the challenging combat and deep character customization of Etrian Odyssey with a traditional overworld, towns, and a narrative reminiscent of SNES-era RPGs. Players choose from seven distinct classes—Fighter, Rogue, Samurai, Knight, Mage, Healer, and Princess—each with unique skill trees and four visual designs (the Princess has four female options). With up to 16 guild members and 210 total skills, party composition is highly flexible.
A signature system is the Exhaust gauge, which allows characters to drastically boost a single action's effectiveness (attack power, healing, status effect potency) up to three times per battle before needing to rest at an inn. The world is also plagued by Furowaro flowers; stepping on them damages the party by 2% HP but is necessary to clear paths and weaken dragons. Towns surrounded by these flowers suffer from inflated prices, and dungeons with active blooms feature stronger bosses.
The game features a free scenario structure after the prologue, allowing players to tackle events and dungeons in variable order. It sold over 100,000 copies in its first two weeks and received a 33/40 from Famitsu. Despite never receiving an official Western release, a complete English fan translation by Geoff Embree (Pokeytax) was released in April 2014, initially disguised as an April Fool's joke about an Etrian Odyssey retranslation.
The fan translation offers two patch versions: a standard release and a "USA" version with lowered encounter rates and field damage for less punishing play. A known emulator bug in DeSmuME causes crashes when landing on the central island group, which can be bypassed with a specific cheat code. The translation remains fully playable on hardware and other emulators like NO$GBA.
