About This Retro Game
Released by Whoopee Camp in 1999, Tomba! 2 upgrades the original's 2D sprites to low-poly 3D models while retaining the unique 'Event' system that lets you tackle quests at your own pace. The world is more interconnected, with new towns, mines, and forests to explore. Tomba can now change direction at intersections, shifting between foreground and background paths in a way that makes the 2.5D space feel genuinely deep.
New costumes drastically alter how you play. The Flying Squirrel suit lets Tomba glide across wide gaps, the Swimming Pig suit allows him to explore underwater areas, and various Pig disguises let him converse with friendly swine. The weapon arsenal expands with elemental variants like the Ice Boomerang and Fire Hammer, each opening up new environmental puzzles. Boss battles are now fought in circular arenas, where you must grab the Evil Pig and hurl it into its own bag.
While the frame rate drops to 30 FPS and the quest log can be vague, the sheer creativity, charming aesthetic, and improved 3D presentation make Tomba! 2 a worthy follow-up. It was re-released on PSN and received a Special Edition in 2025 with save-anywhere, rewind, and a museum. A true cult classic of the PS1 era.
