About This Retro Game
Released in 1996 by Atlus, Megami Ibunroku Persona marked a bold departure from the mainline Shin Megami Tensei franchise. While it retained the series' signature demon negotiation and fusion systems, it shifted focus to a cast of relatable high school students and their psychological struggles. The game draws heavily on Jungian psychology, with Personas representing the masks we wear and the hidden selves we conceal.
Gameplay blends first-person dungeon crawling with isometric tactical combat. Players navigate the labyrinthine corridors of Mikage-cho's hospitals, schools, and underground malls, engaging demons in turn-based battles where positioning matters—sword attacks only reach the front row, while certain spells have area effects. The Velvet Room allows players to fuse new Personas using spell cards collected from defeated or negotiated demons, creating a deep customization system.
The original North American release, titled Revelations: Persona, was heavily criticized for its extensive localization changes—Americanized character names, altered portraits, and the complete removal of the Snow Queen Quest, an entire alternate story route. The PSP version released in 2009 restored the original content and offered a more faithful translation. This PS1 original remains a fascinating historical artifact and the foundation of one of gaming's most beloved RPG franchises.
