Zatch Bell!!: Dream Tag Tournament
Zatch Bell!!: Dream Tag Tournament is a 2D tag-team fighting game released exclusively in Japan for the Game Boy Advance in 2005. Breaking from its predecessors, the game shifts from human-mamodo pairs to a system where two mamodos form a dream team, with their human partners summoned only for assist attacks. It features 18 playable characters, a story-driven tournament mode, arcade and versus modes, four mini-games, and full multiplayer support via the GBA Link Cable.

About This Retro Game
Unlike earlier Zatch Bell games where a human and their mamodo fought as a single unit, Dream Tag Tournament introduces a bold new structure: you select two mamodos to form a tag team, and the battle is fought one-on-one with the inactive mamodo serving as a striker-style assist. Human book-owners are no longer the primary fighters—they are called in only for special attacks, making the synergy between the two mamodos the core of every match.
The roster includes 18 playable characters drawn from the manga and anime, ranging from Gash and Kiyomaro to fan-favorite rivals like Brago and Sherry. The game’s main single-player mode, the Thunder Class Tournament, presents a ladder of nine battles where you distribute power between attack, defense, and spell stats before each fight—a light layer of team-building that rewards planning as much as reflexes.
Beyond the main tournament, the game offers a Dream Match arcade mode, Free Battle, two-player versus via Link Cable, a training mode, a collectibles gallery, and four distinct mini-games that unlock additional content. The “Friendship Gauge” mechanic lets you unleash a super special spell when it fills, adding a dramatic comeback tool to the fast, button-friendly combat.
Dream Tag Tournament is remembered as a curious, content-rich entry in the GBA’s licensed fighting game catalog—one that dared to rework the series’ core formula and delivered a surprisingly deep tag-team system on a handheld best known for simpler brawlers.
