Brigandine: Grand Edition

The story of Forsena begins in 214, when the kingdom of Almekia finally defeated its long-time rival Norgard, bringing an uneasy peace to the central plains. That peace shatters in the second month of 215, when Admiral Zemeckis assassinates King Henguist, seizes the throne, and proclaims himself emperor of the newly founded Esgares Empire. Possessed by a hunger for total conquest, Zemeckis turns his armies on the neighboring kingdoms, plunging Forsena back into war. As a Rune Knight bound to one of the six powers, you must decide the fate of the continent.

Gameplay combines grand strategy with tactical turn-based combat. On the world map, you manage castles, recruit Rune Knights, summon and evolve monsters, and deploy platoons of up to three knights and their monster retinues. Battles shift to a grid-based tactical view where positioning, elemental affinities, and terrain determine victory. Grand Edition refines this formula with a rock-paper-scissors elemental system (red beats green, green beats blue, blue beats red), a 13-turn castle capture rule, equippable items for monsters, and visible accuracy and evasion statistics. Critical attacks can be triggered on command at the cost of accuracy, adding a layer of risk-reward to every engagement.

Grand Edition is a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple port. It replaces the original's 3D opening and battle animations with a cinematic anime opening and faster 2D sprite animations, adds Japanese voice acting for key characters, and introduces a new orchestral soundtrack by Tenpei Sato. It also adds new Rune Knights, classes, items, and monsters, and makes the villainous Esgares Empire a fully playable faction with its own story cutscenes. A final boss awaits once the continent is unified. Though never released outside Japan, Grand Edition is widely considered the best version of Brigandine and a hidden gem of the PlayStation strategy library.
