Released at the peak of the Attitude Era on November 21, 2000, Know Your Role featured Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, The Undertaker, and Kane alongside iconic stables like D-Generation X. Its season mode was revolutionary, allowing players to guide any Superstar through months of branching storylines, backstage skits, and random events like surprise run-ins and alliance formations.

The creation suite was the deepest yet seen on a console wrestling title, with players crafting custom wrestlers, taunts, and full entrance choreography with pyro and lighting. The fast-paced arcade combat prioritized fluid grappling, reversal windows, and up to five stored finishers, enabling dramatic come-from-behind victories that mirrored the unpredictability of Attitude Era main events.

Backstage brawls expanded fight locations from the locker room to the boiler room and parking lot. Match variety included Hell in a Cell, TLC, Royal Rumble, King of the Ring, and hardcore matches. The soundtrack featured Marilyn Manson's 'The Beautiful People' as the theme, and as of 2024, the fan community continues to support the game with comprehensive mod packs that add new wrestlers, fix bugs, and expand the season mode.
