About This Retro Game
Released in 1993 by Chunsoft for the Super Famicom, this spin-off of Dragon Quest IV follows Torneko's dream of becoming the world's greatest weapons merchant. Hearing rumours of a mysterious dungeon brimming with priceless treasures, Torneko petitions the king to open a new shop nearby, then descends into the ever-changing labyrinth to gather wares and gold.
The game established the core Mystery Dungeon formula: turn-based movement where each player action is followed by every enemy's move, randomly generated floors that change with every expedition, and the ever-present hunger meter that forces you to balance exploration with survival. Torneko can equip weapons and shields, use spell scrolls, staves, and herbs, and store precious items in a vault for future runs—creating a persistent progression loop that rewards planning alongside luck.
The legendary creative team includes producer Koichi Nakamura, director Seiichiro Nagahata, and music by Koichi Sugiyama with character designs by Akira Toriyama. The soundtrack exclusively arranges Torneko's theme from Dragon Quest IV. Though originally released only in Japan, a fan translation by Magic Destiny in 2004 opened the game to English-speaking audiences. A remaster titled Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon - Chotto Suteki na Remaster was released in 2026 for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, marking the first official release outside Japan.
