Return of the Double Dragon PLUS
HackReturn of the Double Dragon PLUS is a fan-made improvement hack for the Super Nintendo classic known in the West as Super Double Dragon. The original game was infamous for being rushed to market, cutting the creators' true vision short. This hack aims to correct that by restoring an intro, new cutscenes, and a proper ending, utilizing original unused assets found within the game's ROM. It also builds upon earlier gameplay refinements from the 'Kencho' patch, making the Lee brothers' adventure feel more complete and responsive than ever.

About This Retro Game
Developed by Jackic with cutscene design by Kakamora, Return of the Double Dragon PLUS (v0.9, released October 2026) is based on the superior Japanese version of the game. The hack restores a narrative framework that was missing from the original release, adding a proper introduction and ending to give the journey of Billy and Jimmy Lee a sense of closure. When possible, the team used original unused assets discovered within the game's code, honouring the developers' intended vision.
The hack incorporates the notable gameplay improvements from the earlier 'Kencho' patch, which many fans consider essential. These include a Dragon Power Meter that fills 33% faster, basic attacks that are two frames faster for better responsiveness, and a modernised blocking system where holding the block button keeps the guard up indefinitely, rather than requiring timed presses. The R button is also repurposed for blocking.
Additionally, the hack introduces new mechanics, such as allowing enemies to pick up and use dropped weapons. However, one known trade-off is the removal of the background music from the Chinatown stage. The patch can be applied to either the Japanese 'Return of Double Dragon' ROM or the North American 'Super Double Dragon' ROM. For fans who found the original too sluggish or incomplete, this PLUS version transforms the experience into a more playable and narratively satisfying beat 'em up.
