About This Retro Game
Pokemon Crippling Medical Debt Edition begins with an unfortunate truck accident that leaves the protagonist facing an enormous medical bill without insurance. Rather than setting out only to become Champion, the player must travel across an original region, defeat powerful Trainers, challenge the Pokemon League, and somehow earn enough money to clear the debt. The unusual premise gives the adventure a lighthearted and satirical tone while still delivering a full-length Pokemon journey.
The difficulty is designed to be significantly higher than that of an official Pokemon game, but it remains below the extreme challenge associated with Kaizo hacks. Gym battles and other important encounters are intended to reward careful team building, good move selection, and advance planning. Soft level caps and the Set battle style are enabled by default, although both settings can be changed through the options menu.
Players interested in challenge runs can complete the game as a Nuzlocke. An optional Nuzlocke Conveniences menu provides features intended to reduce unnecessary bookkeeping and make self-imposed challenge rules easier to manage. These options allow the game to support experienced competitive players and challenge runners without forcing the same restrictions on everyone.
Every Pokemon released through Pecharunt is obtainable within the game. Mega Evolution is also supported, with the exception of Mega Evolutions introduced in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Battles use Generation 9 mechanics, giving the Emerald-based adventure modern abilities, moves, types, items, statistics, and mechanical interactions.
The project was created as a solo-developed decompilation hack over roughly two years of intermittent work. It is built on a heavily modified version of the Pokemon Emerald Expansion Base 1.10.2 from Rom Hacking Hideout. The public release is presented as a complete game, with detailed documentation available for encounters, Trainers, items, mechanics, and learnsets, although that documentation contains major spoilers.
