About This Game
Golden Axe III introduces RPG-like branching paths where player choices affect the story's outcome - a first for the series. The new 'Combo System' allows character-specific special moves when executing precise button combinations during jumps or attacks.
The expanded bestiary features over 30 enemy types including dual-wielding skeletons and shamans that summon reinforcements. Rideable creatures now include frost wolves and volcanic turtles, each with unique environmental interactions (ice trails/lava immunity).
Though criticized for rushed development (evident in some hit detection issues), the game was praised for its experimental mechanics including character-specific magic attacks and the introduction of 'team-up' moves in 2-player mode.
The soundtrack by Tohru Nakabayashi blends traditional Golden Axe motifs with Genesis-techno fusion tracks. This entry remained Japan-exclusive until its 2018 international re-release in the Sega Genesis Classics collection.
