About This Retro Game
Developed by Nintendo R&D1 and planned for release in 1996, Bound High! was unfortunately cancelled when the Virtual Boy was discontinued. The game tasks players with guiding a bouncing sphere across elevated grids, using well-timed jumps and rolls to smash enemies from below while avoiding falling into the abyss. The stereoscopic 3D makes judging height and distance genuinely engaging.
The prototype features multiple stages, each introducing new enemy types with distinct movement patterns. Some enemies require multiple hits, while others explode when touched. Players can use the sphere's bounce to reach higher platforms or drop down from above for surprise attacks. The visual style is striking, with black backgrounds, red wireframe-like structures, and a bright bouncing ball that seems to hover in true 3D space.
Although never officially sold, Bound High! was leaked as a prototype ROM and has since become a holy grail for Virtual Boy collectors and retro enthusiasts. Its polished presentation and clever gameplay have earned it a reputation as one of the best unreleased games in Nintendo's history.
