Pokémon Golden Shield
HackPokémon Golden Shield is a completed NDS ROM hack by cos_mino, built on Pokémon HeartGold. It reimagines the Johto region with a Pokédex centered on the Galar region from Sword & Shield, featuring Generation 8 wild encounters and updated trainer teams. The hack uses the hg-engine battle engine to bring moves, items, and abilities up to Generation 9, while preserving the original story structure through the post-game with script adjustments to fit the new roster.

About This Retro Game
The core premise of Golden Shield is to answer a simple question: how would Johto's Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and Champion battle if they had access to Galarian Pokémon and modern competitive tools? Every major battle has been reworked with new teams, strategies, and surprises, while the familiar journey through Johto remains intact. The creator noted that the initial Pokédex aimed for direct Galarian counterparts to Kanto and Johto species where possible, though gaps inevitably existed.
Quality-of-life changes make the experience smoother than the original HeartGold. TMs are reusable, most HM requirements have been removed (only Surf and Fly are necessary), and Rock Climb is accessible early. The game is compatible with native hardware, specifically real 3DS systems, and features aesthetic upgrades inspired by the Generation 8 user interface. Full documentation is provided covering Pokédex changes, encounter locations, boss trainer teams, and item updates.
Several known bugs have been documented by the creator. On the DeSmuME emulator, a graphical glitch scrambles or blacks out the overworld, which can be temporarily fixed by opening and closing the Bag or Party menu. Tohjo Falls has scrambled terrain permissions that force Surf usage under waterfalls. A double battle before Ecruteak City reportedly crashed on a 3DS during testing. The National Park Bug Contest and Safari Zone remain unmodified and will yield Pokémon outside the Golden Shield Dex.
The hack requires patching a legitimate HeartGold ROM using xdelta files, with separate patches available for USA, Europe, and Xenophobia releases. The creator recommends xdeltaUI or DeltaPatcher. Players have reported checksum mismatches when using unclean or mismatched ROMs, so starting with a fresh, verified dump is essential. Version 1.5 was released on November 15, 2025, and the project is marked as completed.
