Pokémon Crystal Inheritance
HackPokémon Crystal Inheritance is a comprehensive ROM hack of the Game Boy Color classic Pokémon Crystal. It sends players on a time-traveling adventure through a historic version of the Johto region. When Ilex Forest comes under threat, the mythical Pokémon Celebi pulls the player back in time to prevent a catastrophe. Players must unite Johto against the power-hungry Emperor Mejimi and his three generals, who are exploiting a crisis to tighten their grip on the region. Instead of the traditional badge-collecting journey, the goal is to save the future of Johto itself, with two possible endings depending on the choices made along the way.

About This Retro Game
Built on the foundation of the excellent Polished Crystal 3.0.0, Inheritance brings modern Pokémon conveniences to the GBC engine, including the Fairy type, the Physical/Special split, natures, unlimited TMs, and running shoes. The hack features a custom Pokédex of 254 entries, pulling in Pokémon from the Sinnoh and Hisui regions alongside two original fakemon: Keeper Noctowl and Minsir.
The game introduces a reworked Apricorn system that allows players to craft five new Pokéball types—Bub Ball, Herb Ball, Deci Ball, Jeze Ball, and Geode—from materials found in the overworld. A unique 'Hidden Palette' system lets NPCs adjust a Pokémon's DVs to grant them unique color palettes and corresponding Hidden Power types. The entire Pokédex can be caught in a single playthrough.
Inheritance offers three difficulty modes: Easy, where enemies have no EVs or items; Normal, a tough but fair challenge; and Expert, where bosses field full teams of six with coverage moves and maximized EVs. A Nuzlocke mode is built directly into the options menu. The hack also emphasizes overworld puzzles that exploit the time travel mechanic, a Trick House in historic Ilex Forest, and a Sandbox Room that grants items or Pokémon for custom playstyles.
Since its full v1.0 release in May 2026, the hack has been praised for its ambitious scope and polish. It is available to patch via Hackdex, which automates the patching process; players must supply their own Pokémon Crystal ROM.
