About This Retro Game
Gran Turismo 2 Plus began as a passion project to address the rushed development cycle of the original Gran Turismo 2, which was infamously released with numerous bugs, missing features, and unbalanced events. The mod systematically restores hidden content left in the game's data, including unreleased cars, textures, and UI elements, while implementing over a hundred bug fixes that Poly Digital never addressed.
The modification significantly overhauls the racing AI, making opponents more competitive and less prone to the 'train' behavior where cars simply follow each other. Event rewards have been rebalanced to reduce grinding, and new prize cars have been added to races that previously offered none. The mod also restores the 'Hybrid' system cut from the final release, allowing deeper customization within the game's original engine.
Quality-of-life improvements include faster menu navigation, the ability to save anywhere, and restored music tracks that were disabled in certain regions. Weather effects and time transitions cut from the original have been partially restored, adding visual variety to endurance races. The mod is playable on original hardware via burned discs on modded consoles or through emulation.
Since its release, Gran Turismo 2 Plus has gained a dedicated following within the speedrunning and classic racing communities. The mod is considered the definitive way to experience GT2 for many fans, balancing authenticity with essential fixes. While it changes the game economy and AI, care has been taken to preserve the original handling physics that made Gran Turismo 2 a benchmark for console racing simulation.
