About This Retro Game
The game features six different attack techniques including punches, kicks, jumping attacks, and special spinning maneuvers. Each of the five stages concludes with a unique boss fight against martial arts masters like nunchaku-wielding opponents and acrobatic kung fu fighters.
Developed by Sega's AM2 division, Black Belt was designed to showcase realistic martial arts movements rather than exaggerated street brawling. The animation was motion-captured from actual karate practitioners.
The Master System version improved upon the 1985 SG-1000 original with enhanced graphics, additional enemy types, and smoother scrolling. The soundtrack combines traditional Japanese percussion with synthesized action themes.
Though challenging by modern standards, Black Belt was praised for its technical achievements and authentic combat feel. It sold approximately 120,000 copies worldwide and influenced later beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage.
